By admin, on May 9th, 2012 The FBI is asking Internet companies not to oppose a controversial proposal that would require firms, including Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, and Google, to build in backdoors for government surveillance.
In meetings with industry representatives, the White House, and U.S. senators, senior FBI officials argue the dramatic shift in communication from the telephone system to the Internet has made it far more difficult for agents to wiretap Americans suspected of illegal activities, CNET has learned.
The FBI general counsel’s office has drafted a proposed law that the bureau claims is the best solution: requiring that social-networking Web sites and providers of VoIP, instant messaging, and Web e-mail alter their code to ensure their products are wiretap-friendly.
By admin, on May 8th, 2012 Another day, another report on Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 5, this time from Mac blog iLounge, which claims via a “reliable source” to have confirmed details of a thinner, longer smartphone sporting scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 2 on the front, a metal panel on the back and a roughly 4-inch screen, larger than the 3.5-inch screen found on the current edition of the iPhone.
In addition, the next iPhone will have a smaller dock connector with fewer pins and will be roughly 20 percent thinner than the iPhone 4. “Approximate measurements are 125mm by 58.5mm by 7.4mm—a 10mm jump in height, nearly 2mm reduction in thickness, and virtually identical width,” the article said. “According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone. This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic.”
While there’s no shortage of rumors and anonymous sources speculating on the design specification, iLounge has a pretty good track record when it comes to their information. The site had earlier reported details about the then-upcoming new iPad, claiming it would be thicker and boast a better camera, both of which turned out to be true. The site’s claim that the new iPhone’s screen size would change the aspect ratio of the screen has also raised a discussion about application resolution and other app development considerations.

If successfully exploited, the vulnerability could allow hackers to crash and even take control of an affected system.
According to Adobe, the Microsoft Vulnerability Research (MSVR) program reported the vulnerability on April 25. The patch was pushed out as soon as it was available, a company spokesperson said.
“There are reports that the object confusion vulnerability (CVE-2012-0779) addressed in this update is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious file delivered in an email message,” Wendy Poland, senior program manager on Adobe’s Product Security Incident Response Team, explained in a blog post. “The exploit targets Flash Player on Internet Explorer for Windows only.”
The vulnerability exists in Flash Player versions 11.2.202.233 and earlier for Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems, as well as versions 11.1.115.7 and earlier for Android 4.x and versions 11.1.111.8 and earlier for Android versions 3.x and 2.x. The company said the plan to include a Google Play link for Android users at some point today so that they can get the update for their devices.
“The patch is of highest urgency as there are attacks in the wild against the vulnerability,” said Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys.
By admin, on May 4th, 2012 Millions of Facebook users may be getting too open with their personal information on the Web’s biggest social network. According to Consumer Reports an estimated 13 million Facebook users in the U.S. either do not use or are not aware of the site’s privacy controls. In addition, 28 percent of the people the magazine polled said they share either all or almost all of their Facebook posts with people beyond their ‘friends.’ In addition, only 37 percent of users say they have used the site’s privacy tools to limit how much information apps are allowed to see.
“Facebook really is changing the way the world socially communicates and has become a successful service in part by leveraging copious amounts of personal data that can be spread far wider than its users might realize,” said Jeff Fox, Consumer Reports Technology Editor, in a statement.
“Our investigation revealed some fascinating, and some disquieting trends–but ones always worth knowing for consumers who wish to keep their personal data under better control.”
The figures were extrapolated based on a sample of 2,002 adults with an Internet connection, including 1,340 that were active on Facebook. According to the magazine, an estimated 4.8 million people have posted where they plan to go on a certain day, which the group argued is a potential tip-off to burglars. In addition, Consumer Reports projected 4.7 million have “liked” a Facebook page about health conditions or treatments. But that was hardly the only personal information Facebook users were sharing online.
By admin, on May 3rd, 2012 Microsoft is continuing to investigate a report of a vulnerability in Skype that allows someone to ascertain the IP addresses of logged-on users.
News of the situation has circulated widely since information about it was posted last week on Pastebin. The Pastebin post included a script to help automate the exploitation of the issue on a patched version of Skype 5.5. The flaw allows someone to see a Skype user’s vCard—a standard file format for electronic business cards. A look in the log will reveal the Skype user’s IP addresses as well as the internal network card IP address on the user’s computer.
From there, running the IP address information through the WHOIS service can be used to determine a user’s location information. The technique only works if the person being targeted is online.
“We are investigating reports of a new tool that captures a Skype user’s last known IP address,” said Adrian Asher, director of product security at Skype, in a prepared statement. “This is an ongoing, industry-wide issue faced by all peer-to-peer software companies. We are committed to the safety and security of our customers, and we are takings measures to help protect them.”
Knowledge of this situation is critical for those who use Skype in situations where their location needs to be kept secure, as well as for those just interested in personal privacy, blogged Nick Furneaux, managing director of U.K.-based CSITech.

By admin, on May 1st, 2012 Microsoft and Barnes & Noble have entered into an agreement by which Microsoft will invest $300 million in Barnes & Noble’s new digital and college book business, thereby settling its patent battle with the book seller, contributing to the creation of a new subsidiary and taking a 17.6 percent share of that business.
The new Barnes & Noble subsidiary, which will build upon the history of innovation in digital reading technologies from both companies, has not been named and will be referred to as Newco. The partnership will accelerate the transition to e-reading, which is revolutionizing the way people consume, create, share and enjoy digital content, the companies said.
The new subsidiary will bring together the digital and college businesses of Barnes & Noble. After Microsoft’s investment, Barnes & Noble will own approximately 82.4 percent of the new subsidiary, which will have an ongoing relationship with the company’s retail stores.
Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have settled their patent litigation, and moving forward, Barnes & Noble and Newco will have a royalty-bearing license under Microsoft’s patents for its NOOK eReader and Tablet products. This paves the way for both companies to collaborate and reach a broader set of customers. Microsoft filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Barnes & Noble last year.
